It’s now October, and that means that it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month! There are many opportunities for individuals, organizations, businesses, and even schools to fundraise for such an important cause. The TBCRU trainee team at Robarts Research Institute have not been strangers to fundraising for breast cancer awareness. This year is no different; we look forward to planning and executing an extraordinary event for this year’s annual Dress for the Cause Day on October 25th.
What is our plan this year? This year we are happy and excited to be hosting another bake sale for this event. With many well-known bakers within our lab group, this event has proven to be a huge success year after year. To expand on our fundraising from last year, we are hoping to host a variety of games, contests, and social media opportunities in addition to our usual baking efforts!
If you’re considering fundraising with your team and wondering what hosting an event is all about. I thought it might be helpful to share some of the highlights from last year’s Bake Sale.
The first step for us was to recruit some volunteer bakers to create some pink and “Dress for the Cause theme” assorted goods! We were able to gather a list of volunteers in advance for us to determine how many baked goods we would have available to sell. We are lucky to have a variety of creative individuals in our research group. So many of the baked goods sold quickly, they were very popular due to how they decorated them!
Additionally, we had some fun planning some extra activities for people who came by to visit our bake sale booth. A photo booth frame was made for people to dress up in pink attire and take photos with as well! It helped with spreading the word on social media and allowed the actual location of our event to be much more visible.
Hopefully, these photos show you how easy and straightforward it can be to host your fundraising event. Not sure if a bake sale is for you? The Breast Cancer Society has provided a lot of fun ideas for different activities you can host, depending on your fundraising goals. Check out the Dress for the Cause Fundraising tips at dressforthecause.ca! Additionally, here are some BCSC community events that have been held in the past if you need even more ideas.
Throughout October, we encourage you to continue to use #ResearchMatters and #DressfortheCause as Breast Cancer Awareness month has kicked off. Best of luck in your planning, we look forward to seeing your Dress for the Cause events.
